Our local American Petroleum Institute (API) Chapter is a semi autonomous organization associated with the national API organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. The mission of the national group, which has over 600 corporate company members, is to influence public policy in support of the US oil and gas industry. The purview of the national group includes education, standards and certification, research and development, and advocacy for the industry. The national group provides a forum whereby consensus policies can be formulated on issues impacting its members. The mission of individual API chapters throughout the United States is to provide continuing education to local members employed in the drilling, production, transmission, transportation and refining of oil and gas.
Originally chartered in Lafayette in 1952 as the API Teche Chapter, the name change to Acadiana Chapter occurred recently to better reflect the regional role of our organization. With over 1,000 corporate and individual members, our local chapter is active in numerous fundraising activities to provide educational programs for its members. Organization activities are governed by a twenty member Board of Directors.
The primary focus of our chapter is educational opportunity for college level students. Each September, the Chapter’s Steve Gruver Memorial Scholarship Program winners are announced. Chapter members dependents compete through an application process directed by a scholarship committee. During last year’s program, ten $2,000 scholarships were awarded to students attending colleges and universities throughout the US; half of those were awarded to UL Lafayette students. In addition, numerous UL Petroleum Engineering graduate level students are awarded stipends by the chapter.
Over the past eleven years almost $600,000 in scholarships, stipends and grants have been awarded to numerous students and organizations by the API Acadiana Chapter. Fundraisers to support the chapter’s programs include a team roping competition each April, a raffle style event each spring, and a sporting clay competition each summer.
Through General Meetings held every other month, our organization provides its members and guests presentations on various aspects of the oil and gas industry. Topics range from technical discussion of emerging technology to general discussions of economic policy or other oil and gas policy issues. The API Acadiana Chapter is open to membership for companies and individuals in all aspects of the oil and gas industry. Please join us.
